Report
On February 27, 2025 , a JSPS gender equality symposium Academia × Gender × Global: The Gender Landscape in Academia in Japan and Beyond was held online.
The symposium consisted of three parts: two lectures and a panel discussion. In the keynote speech of Part 1, titled In Pursuit of an Inclusive Academic Community—from the Perspectives of Gender Equity and Intersectionality, the speaker, ITO Kimio, Emeritus Professor at Kyoto University and Osaka University and Auditor of the National Women’s Education Center, approached the topic from a sociological perspective and discussed the transformations that modern society has undergone. He also explained that a diversified society, together with systems designed to meet the needs of all people—ensuring that no one is left behind—can foster innovation in academia.
In Part 2, Claudia Jesus-Rydin, Coordinator of the ERCEA Gender and Diversity Activity Group at the European Research Council, delivered a lecture titled Inclusive Excellence in Europe , where she presented specific plans, goals, and criteria currently being implemented by the European Research Council (ERC) to promote gender equality and diversity. Her presentation also highlighted how these actions have led to the successful recruitment of many female researchers.
In Part 3, a lively discussion took place, moderated by Professor NAKANO Ryohei Thomas of the Faculty of Science at Hokkaido University, who also serves as a JSPS Gender Equality Advisor. The panelists included the two speakers from Parts 1 and 2, along with Professor KAI Toshie of the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences and Director of the Student Mobility Unit, Center for Global Initiatives, both at Osaka University.

We were honored to welcome approximately 430 participants to the symposium.
Thank you very much for your participation.
